GHBA and ASID 2014 Awards

The last two weeks have been an absolute dream for us at Eklektik Interiors. Many of you already know about our exciting time at the ASID and GHBA awards. We feel so overwhelmed (in a good way!) by all the support and congratulations that each of you have extended to us. Thank you to the greatest people that make our jobs so wonderful! For those who haven’t heard, here’s our chance to share our big news! Kathy Anderson and the Eklektik design team were presented with three prism awards for a remodel of a private residence. The following three home remodels were selected as the 2014 GHBA winners.

Custom Interior Design from Accessories to Art

When we say custom, we mean custom!  The best part about being a designer is meeting with each of you.  Seeing what you see and learning what you like inspires our creativity.  It’s a fascinating realization that there are no two people the same.  We would fail miserably as designers if we tried to do the same thing for every home.  This is exactly why we are so concerned with providing each individual with a custom experience and a custom design, as unique as your own signature!

To prove how serious we are about designing a unique and one-of-a-kind space, we want to share with you a project that our very own designer, Stephanie Vaughan (who is amazing, BTW), recently finished.  If you’ve read her “about me” on our blog, you know how much artistry and creativity she brings to our design group.  Recently, she was asked by a client of ours to create a custom art piece of her wire and glass work.  Her sweat and blood went into this project, literally – that’s how far we’ll go for you!

Taken from her blog, here is the production of the custom art from start to finish. If you see or talk to Stephanie, let her know how awesome she is!

For the first time in a very long time (over 10 years), I have been asked to create a commission of my wire and glass work.  At first I was in such disbelief, it took a while to really sink in.  Once it started becoming real to me, it became very challenging and finally very rewarding as I got to the end.  Here is the process as it went along.

To begin the installation process of this 6′ glass laden circle in the Heights loft, I contacted an art installation specialist, Devon Moore of DCM Art Services. After some communications and planning, we decided it would be best for me to handle the transport and he and his crew would handle the installation. Once this was decided, I reverted back to my old tried and true method of transporting this type of precarious artwork by laying it in a pool of packing peanuts in the back of our box truck. Our logistics guru at Eklektik Interiors, Hugo, assisted me in picking it up from my house/studio and delivering it safe and sound to the loft. WHEW – that was a HUGE relief! Hugo you are the bomb!

The next day I met Anna Light (my co-worker and the designer for the Zannoni’s home) and Devon from DCM at the loft to start installation.  Even though I was confident in DCM and their ability to get the job done professionally, I was still nervous about the install.  Unfortunately, when I started painting the horizontal lines on the front of the canvas, I went off balance from the bracer bars in the back.  So, the hardware had to be installed diagonally on the back in order for the piece to hang level on the front.  Big lesson learned of how important it is to work out the hanging mechanics BEFORE starting the painting or glass.  The guys did an amazing job and our clients were very happy with the final result, which now hangs in their loft.  I am truly grateful for having the chance to create this piece of art for two adorable art lovers.  This whole experience has been surreal and I can’t wait for me next one.

I attended school close to home at Lamar University.  I received two bachelor degrees; one in Interior Design and the other in Graphic Design.  I graduated in 2007 and immediately went to work in the interior design field.  I have worked at several design firms, but I have been at Eklektik Interiors since the fall of 2010.

James and I have been married for three years on October 23, and there has not been a dull moment yet.  He works as a tankerman on a tug boat, and I am an interior designer at Eklektik Interiors.  He is gone for 20 days and home for 10 days.  When he is home we usually go boat riding, swimming or fishing on Lake Conroe.  We also hang out with friends and play cards, too.  James never meets a stranger so I am always meeting “new friends”.

We just moved into our house this summer.  I drew up a floor plan, and James built it.  The outside is complete as you can tell from the picture, but the inside is a different story.  We have one fully functional bathroom, complete bedroom, office and a halfway completed guest bedroom.  I have a temporary kitchen set up for now, but we will eventually get cabinets and new appliances.  James keeps asking where is the real silverware (technically it is in storage).  I told him, “When we get a real kitchen you can have real silverware”.  Until then, it is paper plates and plastic forks.

James and I have different taste in styles.  He loves traditional…the more carved wood the better.  I like more transitional, clean lines, and unique pieces.  But we both love the color blue as you can tell from the outside of the house.  The inside of the house is neutral with pops of blue.

Through the years, I have worked on many different styles.  We have been working on a lot of transitional projectsnot too heavy and cleaner lines.  I have been working on several remodel projects that are transitional, and there is never a dull moment because you never know what is behind the sheetrock.  Daniel and I usually are working together on the remodels. He has called me to come and look at what he found during demo…interesting to say the least.

Kathy and I recently won several awards in the Ferguson Design Competition for a kitchen remodel that we completed in the Houston Memorial area.  We actually remodeled the entire house (kitchen, master bathroom, master closet, powder room and secondary bathrooms), including paint and new flooring.  The master bathroom result was also fabulous!  It always feels good to help our clients see their imagination become a reality.

Using Technology in Bathroom Remodels

Technology Improvements are Luxurious

bathroom, remodeling, ideas, renovation

Home improvement, renovation and remodeling can all be fairly expensive and time consuming projects. There are many ways, some more notable than others, in which we can develop our home that will improve our lifestyle and home value.

In the past, the bathroom  was a small, bog-like standard room, excuse the pun. It was renowned for being one of the last places homeowners would renovate, but that is no longer the case. The bathroom is becoming a highly valued part of the home. Because of this, more homeowners are making improvements to their bathroom décor, accessories and appliances.

Nowadays, many improve or renovate their bathrooms for relaxation and hygiene purposes. We can do this in several ways, but today I wish to discuss a few appliances in the modern era that I love and some gorgeous accessories too.

High-tech bathroom appliances

The bathroom was once a place with a simple function: to aid our physical needs and our personal hygiene. The changes are massive in the modern era! Baths have changed from a necessity to a luxury with master baths having spa-like feels to them. Our demand for relaxation and entertainment has been increased too. Today, it’s not unusual to find a TV mounted in a bathroom. If you’re looking to amp up the luxury, considering adding customized technology to your bathroom such as televisions and high-tech showers.

High-tech customized showers

Technology in the home is something that is being developed all the time, especially for the bathroom. One of the main appliances that has experienced remarkable upgrades has got to be the shower. Gone are the days when we have to struggle to find the right temperature. Now high-tech showers are being introduced into the industry that not only allow us to digitally control our temperature gauge but to also adjust the water volume and massage settings within the shower.

The American company, Kohler, was one of the first to bring out a ‘DTV Custom Showering Experience’. The concept was created to “wrap water, sound, light and steam together in a seamless and totally customized style”.

Incorporating a television into your bathroom

Televisions can be placed almost anywhere nowadays and that includes in the bathroom. Can you think of anything more relaxing than turning down the lights, lighting a few candles and relaxing in a warm bubbly bath while watching your favourite TV shows?

There are a few different ways in which you can incorporate a TV into your bathroom:

    • Buying a stand alone TV which can be mounted onto a wall at the perfect eye line for your relaxation.
    • Adding a television to your medicine cabinet. This option adds more storage space while supplying you a clever place for your TV.
    • Television mirrors, add you TV into your vanity mirror… It’s a design lover’s haven.

Design company, Seura, have created a product which enhances lamination to create a television and mirror. Simply mind blowing!

Bathroom accessories

Accessories are a much more affordable way to renovate your bathroom or, for that matter, any room in your home. I see so many homes with bathrooms that look outdated because of the small things, such as towels, bath mats and hardware.

Buying some new, bold or colorful towels is a perfect way to refresh the look of your bathroom. You can change the style of your room through more of these cost effective changes such as:

  • Replacing an old bathroom mat
  • Adding a fresh flowers with a contemporary vase
  • Re-grouting your bathroom tiles
  • Repainting or refinishing bathroom cabinets
  • Replacing cabinet hardware and doors with new hinges and dampers

All of the above changes to accessories in your bathroom will have a simple, yet positive effect. Not only will you notice a difference, but so will family members and any guests you may have in your home.

Move vs. Remodel: Where's the Greater Investment?

It’s no secret that the real estate market nationwide is not what it used to be. Home values continue to remain at a level not seen since the early 1980’s. As a result, many homeowners find themselves investing in renovating and remodeling their current homes rather than putting them on the market.

Despite the economy being down, the design world is up due to the existing real estate condition. Opting to increase equity in their homes, Eklektik Interior’s design clients understand the value of personal and ‘signature’ interior improvements. Our designers work with homeowners all over the globe from Kona, Tahoe and Costa Rica—within the Houston area from Memorial , Tanglewood, River Oaks, The Heights, The Woodlands, Rock Creek, Spring, Magnolia, Sugarland, Conroe and even Huntsville.

Master Bathroom Before Remodels

Regardless of where you live, remodeling is a smart and economically safe choice. Not only will you find yourself avoiding the possibility of two mortgages – with your old home and new home – but remodeling will raise the value of your home benefiting you in a later competitive market. The greatest benefit will be a beautifully upgraded and personalized home for you and your family to enjoy!
