Personalize A Favorite Look

I have been to two markets and one great ‘product knowledge’ trip that has kept me going. I am eager to share with you some of the wonderful things I have seen and some observations about interior design that I’ve made.

First, the markets! I have noticed for new design trends that COLOR is making a great comeback. The fact is that Restoration Hardware has really had a major impact on design. I can’t tell you how many times I hear, “I got it at Restoration Hardware,” or “I love Restoration Hardware.” Well, I love the look as well. They have really turned the design industry, especially for their store, upside down.

HOWEVER, that is NOT the only look out there. Frankly, I have to caution people sometimes that you don’t want to look like everyone else…do you? You can take that look to the next level by just popping it with one major splash of color…your signature, on a room. Restoration Hardware’s linen, monochromatic look is lovely and works great, but can be a bit monotonous. If you aren’t careful, you will look like everyone else…let’s face it, you AREN’T everyone else!

How do you take a look that you love and make it your own? Well, color and accessories are a beginning. To keep the look fresh and not too jumbled, pick one color to pop—orange, turquoise, lime green, yellow, are all the rage right now. This strong color contrast will set you apart from others and will allow your personality to shine through. Pillows, large color vases, and amazing art are just a few other ways to make your room your own. Don’t be afraid but be careful not to overdo if you still want a more monochromatic space—just a few areas will do the trick.

Now, let me say here that one of the biggest problems I see in rooms that I go into is too many small accessories and no large ones. I understand why, small accessories are more of an impulse purchase and are typically not too expensive. However, you never quite get the ‘WOW’ factor with a lot of little things. It can start to look cluttered in a hurry. Save your money for the large ‘WOW’ accessories that can really make a difference. Large art pieces can make all the difference in the world. Make a bold statement! You will be happy that you did.
